We set units according to our project requirements. There is an Origin option in Ruler units that mean from where ruler scale units will start. If we choose Spread then it will spread on the whole document area but if you have two pages on your document that is left and right side page then you can choose Page option so that you will have ruler on both side separately. You can choose the unit of stroke width. I will suggest you go with the points unit for stroke or go with the default setting for it.

There are many more parameters here in this option that you can change as per your requirement. You can also change Leading value in context of text from here that means if we change leading value with shortcut key then how much points will it jump for changing its value. Here you can it is 2 point that means when we change leading of text then it will jump automatically 2 points. Next is Grids which we use for proper alignment of text content as well as images.

So there is a number of settings in this option also. You can choose from where the gird starts that mean it will align with top of the page or top of the margin of document page. We have two types of gird in this software so we can make changes in Document gird also like its color, and other parameters. Although we have a number of options here in the Preferences panel the one more option about which I want to tell you is Display Performance. It is important because it adjust the settings of display of raster as well as vector image which we take from any external sources.

When we place any image into this software by default I will display with pixelated quality because in this Display performance option we have default view setting as Typical but we should choose High Quality option from this list so that it will display original pixels of image when we placed it. Not only Default View option but we should also choose High Quality in Adjust View Settings option so that we can see original image quality in view mode also.

So these were some important information about how to reset Preferences in InDesign and it totally depends on your work that which type of changes you want to make in Preferences parameters. Delete half the pages, and see if the problem goes away. If so, now you know which half of the file is the problem. Return to the original file, and remove half of the section you previously removed. Keep deleting segments of the file to narrow the problem to a single page or pages.

Rebuild those pages to heal the problem. Use the Move Pages command in the Pages panel menu to push pages from a damaged document into a new document with the same page setup. A single corrupt story can be the source of the problem.

Try exporting all the text, then deleting one or more of the text frames and see if the problem clears. If so, replace the exported text into new text frames. Actually, any frame object can be the source of crashing. Try deleting a frame object to resolve crashing. Try deleting first the unused paragraph, character, object, table, and cell styles, and color swatches, and see if the problem clears. Sometimes you need to get the text out of the file so that you can rebuild the project.

Yes, that will cost much time. Markzware offers a File Recovery Service. You pay the larger fee only if they are able to recover your file. This will compact and clean up the file, keeping the database smaller, and less prone to corruption.

Practice saving named backups. If the document corrupts, you can go back to a workable version without much loss. Files saved in Dropbox have backups. A free plug-in called Radish can save versions for you. Mac Time Machine could be a resource to retrieve an older version. It makes the file larger, and printing slows down.

Or plan and build a donor InDesign file with correctly-made examples of pieces of your documents, and this could be designed to complement your branding guidelines. Old PostScript Type 1 fonts should be long gone and will not be supported beginning January Remove old PostScript Type 1 fonts. Use only OpenType versions of fonts. This makes the file more prone to corruption. If InDesign always crashes on a particular page, it might be that placed graphic that is corrupt; therefore replacing the placed not pasted graphic can be an easier operation.

New with InDesign is an automatic checking for damage as you open the file. If it detects corruption, InDesign automatically repairs it.

Adobe might be able to help: email or link your file to idfile adobe. Thank-you, Mike! So far, the only real problems I have experienced with InDesign docs are ones that I have created myself. Hoping to get some 'real-world' work soon, and expect that I will run into issues where your list of trouble-shoots and preventative suggestions will save large parts of my anatomy and brain! Thank you Mike and crew!

I am impressed. I book marked this for future reference. I have been using CS4 for 12 years on an old 17" Macbook pro that hasn't been online in 9 years so apple can't update the OS.

Worked great, however, in order to take in new features I just bought a new iMac running Monterey Do you know how to remove fonts from Mac OS or Adobe?

I have fonts, over are foreign language. Its brutally inefficient navigating the menus. Its completely an apple issue I spoke with them and Monerey does not allow removal of fonts by design. This is simply a nightmare. Fonts are not displayed even alphabetically, they are categorized bizarrely.

Apple really screwed this one up. Is there a setting in Adobe products that only allows certain fonts to be displayed when using. I primarily use Indesign, but use Illustrator and Photoshop as well?

Even better if you know how to delete out of Monterey. I see some of your other Terminal commands, but not sure inf any pertains to my issue. I would dump fonts out of Apples font book I will never use. Not to mention the other greyed out fonts I can't remove either. At least they dont clog my menus. Yes, it is quite impossible to remove them. Is there a way to edit the list so I only see english fonts in Indesign and other adobe software? I can't figure that out. RE: crashing app.

I just spent two whole workdays really frustrated with InDesign crashing at least 50 times. Working to edit book files that somebody else created. A professional rep could not help, either. He was very kind, but took a long time to find the wrong answer and create more problems. I figured it out myself afterward.

It's something that I could not find anywhere, so I'm not surprised he didn't know, either. My InDesign app crashed over 50 times in two days because of object styles applied to text frames with anchored graphics. Every time I tried to paste new text on a page with anchored graphics, the app would crash. I could not select the anchored graphics. All I had to do was un-do the object styles applied to the text frames. I wasted time re-installing software, trying other computers, updating OS, trying older versions of software I want to make a public post about this because it was really frustrating to waste two whole days of work time, and then the pro was not able to help, only to delete all my preferences, which took me a while to re-do, and to suggest a solution that would have been way more time-consuming than what I figured out for myself.

This was so helpful. Thank you so much. Need training at your office? Give us a call or, request a quote for custom training.
